British South Africa Company medal, Rhodesia 1896, to Trooper A Da Fonseca, Bulawayo Field Force (only 126 medals awarded to this unit)

 

The medal, first sanctioned by Queen Victoria in 1896, features the Old Head portrait of Queen Victoria with the inscription "Victoria Regina" on the obverse. The reverse displays a depiction of an impaled lion, charging above an assortment of traditional weapons and shields. Its original reverse inscription read "Matabelend 1893", later expanded to include "Rhodesia 1896" and "Mashonaland 1897". The ribbon is a golden yellow color with three evenly spaced dark blue stripes.

 

This is one of the only medals issued by a private company, that was sanctioned by the crown.
